Adventures in QuickTime 3.0:

WAP Says: An Online Matching Game

QuickTime 3.0 was the star of the Washington Apple Pi General Meeting in March 1999. There were many presentations, most of them involving animation or motion picture clips or sound. But there was also something new: an interactive matching game built entirely in QuickTime 3.0 using QuickTime objects. Pi member Tom Berens used LiveStage, a software package from Totally Hip Software, and the Washington Apple Pi Telecommunications System Crew mascot, a penguin. Tom elaborated on this process:

"The WAPsays.mov game is an adaptation of a QuickTime interactive movie called Apple Says iMac, developed by Totally Hip Software for Apple. You can see the original movie at :

To play WAPSays, simply press the Play button and click on the penguins that are designated by the computer. If you correctly repeat the sequence, the penguins rotate clockwise.

The folks at Totally Hip Software kindly provided me with their source code for this movie, along with a copy of their authoring tool, LiveStage. With their permission, I modified their movie by replacing the existing graphics with graphics that were more representative of Washington Apple Pi. The penguins were appropriated from the Pi web page describing the TCS and were enhanced using Photoshop and Extensis PhotoTools. The red Pi sign inside the black apple were created using standard font symbols and Photoshop. I probably could have spent a little more time antialiasing the apple, but I created this project the night before the WAP General Meeting and didn't have much time to spare.

The entire project took several hours. Most of that time was spent editing images in Photoshop. I probably spent less than a half hour creating the revised movie in LiveStage. And, being a typical Mac user, I didn't bother reading any of the LiveStage documentation."

To play WAPSays, select the game image above. You must have QuickTime 3.0 installed, together with the appropriate QuickTime browser plug-in.
