The Penny Monument was created in honor of the most popular coin in world history, the U.S. one cent coin. Literally billions of copies of this famed copper coin are in circulation, filling pockets, jars and desk drawers around the world. The monument itself is patterned after a design on the back of the coin, and is an outstanding example of neo-Classical architecture. Note to touists: oversized once cent pieces (the size of a dinner plate) are for sale in the gift shop, inside the monument on the left.
Many people mistakenly call this the "Lincoln Memorial," but it has nothing to do with the luxury American automobile of the same name.

Movement seems to be growing to build a companion memorial in honor of the nickel. |
